BRUTUS — A 48-year-old Brutus woman has been arrested on felony arson charges after allegedly setting fire to her own home last month, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
Marea L. Slate turned herself in on Tuesday, May 20, and was charged with fourth-degree arson, a class E felony.
Sheriff Brian Schenck reported that the arrest followed an investigation into a house fire that occurred on Friday, April 18, in the Town of Brutus.
Investigators determined Slate intentionally started the fire inside her residence, which resulted in a total loss of the home and damage to surrounding structures.
Slate was processed at the Public Safety Building and released on an appearance ticket.
She is scheduled to appear in Town of Brutus Court on Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m.
Multiple agencies assisted in the investigation, including New York State Fire Investigators with K9 units, the Weedsport, Jordan, Sennett, and Elbridge Fire Departments, Cayuga County Emergency Service Office, Jordan Ambulance, Auburn City Ambulance, Cayuga County 911, and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.
