WORCESTER — A 53-year-old man was arrested Monday after a nine-hour standoff with police at a Forestdale Road residence.
Raymond Nydam was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. after officers responded to a welfare check at about 12:08 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers were informed that a resident was making threats.
Officers discovered that the resident had bolted his door shut and was possibly threatening to use explosives.
While police positioned themselves outside the residence, Nydam allegedly aimed what appeared to be a rifle at an officer while shouting threats.
Officers took cover and called in the Crisis Negotiation Team.
Throughout the standoff, Nydam shouted at officers and threw items from the residence multiple times.
He also armed himself with what appeared to be a samurai sword, according to police.
Officers attempted to negotiate for hours, and the SWAT team was called to assist.
After approximately nine and a half hours, Nydam exited the apartment and was placed under arrest.
He is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
