SYRACUSE — State Police arrested a Canastota man Monday morning after he allegedly fled from a seatbelt checkpoint in Syracuse.

Troopers were conducting a seatbelt enforcement operation at the I-690 West on-ramp from Burnet Avenue at 10:09 a.m. when they observed a red Jeep with the driver not wearing a seatbelt.

When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver failed to comply, according to police.

A pursuit began and ended when the vehicle exited onto N. Townsend Street and stopped at Burnet Avenue in Syracuse.

The driver, identified as Luis M. Rivera, 54, of Canastota, was taken into custody and transported to SP North Syracuse for processing.

Charges are pending and will be released at a later time, authorities said.

Rivera was released with appearance tickets returnable to Syracuse City Court.

Police reported the pursuit covered approximately two miles and lasted about one minute.
