WINDSOR LOCKS — A man who violently attacked a 70-year-old woman without warning in 2022 has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty at trial.
Alexander Lesuer Russell, 42, was sentenced in April following his March conviction for the assault that occurred on Oct. 6, 2022.
The victim was exercise walking near 34 Old County Road around 9:54 a.m. when Russell ran up behind her and struck her in the back of the head with a closed fist, according to Windsor Locks Police.
The blow caused the woman to fall to the ground, resulting in fractured fingers and a serious laceration to her head.
A bystander called 911 to report the assault, prompting officers to respond and provide medical aid while other units searched for the attacker.
Connecticut State Police troopers located Russell on their property on Schoephoester Road in Windsor Locks, where he was detained and later positively identified as the assailant.
The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries following the attack, which police said was random as the victim and Russell did not know each other.
Russell, who had no certain address, was initially held on $150,000 bond and remained in Department of Correction custody until his trial.
He was found guilty of assault on an elderly person and reckless endangerment and currently remains incarcerated.
