LEWISTON — A high-speed police chase ended with multiple vehicles damaged and a Lewiston man in custody after he allegedly drove the wrong way down a one-way street early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 1:20 a.m., Lewiston Police attempted to stop a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Ash Street near Howe Street when the driver fled.

The vehicle was headed directly toward officers when they activated their emergency lights and sirens, according to police.

The suspect, later identified as Erick Estrada, 42, of Lewiston, fled at a high rate of speed down Howe Street toward Sabattus Street.

After crossing Sabattus Street, Estrada continued outbound on Wood Street, where the vehicle lost its rear bumper.

Upon crossing Vale Street, the driver began to lose control, resulting in a collision involving several parked vehicles.

The suspect vehicle ultimately came to a stop on Wood Street just before Campus Avenue.

Estrada attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers.

In total, four vehicles are believed to be totaled — one of which was left on top of another vehicle.

Several additional parked, unoccupied vehicles sustained damage, but no other injuries were reported.

Estrada was taken into custody without further incident and transported to Central Maine Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

He faces multiple charges including eluding an officer, aggravated criminal mischief, OUI, operating without a license, driving to endanger, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal speed and violating conditions of release.

Traffic violations include wrong way on a one-way, seat belt violation, failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle, failure to provide proof of insurance and failure to stop at stop signs.
