HEMPSTEAD — A 62-year-old man faces multiple charges after crashing his vehicle while attempting to flee from New York State Troopers early Friday morning.

Troopers on patrol observed a grey 2004 BMW parked in hazardous markings with its hazard lights on along the Southern State Parkway eastbound near exit 15 in the Town of Hempstead at approximately 2:54 a.m. on May 17.

When officers approached the vehicle to conduct a welfare check, they observed the driver, later identified as Peter Deleon, holding a lighter, glass pipe, and what appeared to be crack cocaine.

After Deleon rolled down his window at the troopers’ request, he allegedly fled when asked to turn off his vehicle.

A brief pursuit followed, ending when Deleon collided with the center median, causing his vehicle to roll over.

Deleon was taken into custody and received treatment for a minor laceration on his head.

He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th and 5th degrees, unlawful fleeing, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operator in the 3rd degree, and multiple other vehicle and traffic law violations.

Deleon will be held at Nassau County Detention awaiting arraignment.
