SCHENECTADY — A Schenectady police officer fired a shot during a confrontation with a knife-wielding teenage girl Wednesday evening, authorities said.
The 16-year-old girl was not struck by the bullet but was later taken into custody using a Taser, according to a police department news release.
Officers responded to 1007 Strong Street at approximately 7:21 p.m. following reports of an altercation.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a female holding a large knife and attempted to communicate with her while calling negotiators to the scene.
About 50 minutes after police arrived, the teen left the front porch and ran toward officers with the knife still in her hand, prompting Officer Sophia Olson to fire one shot.
Olson, who joined the Schenectady Police Department in June 2024, missed the teenager.
The girl was transported to a local hospital with what appeared to be self-inflicted, non-life-threatening injuries to her arm.
No other injuries were reported during the incident.
The department’s Detective Division, Youth Aid Bureau, and Office of Professional Standards are continuing to investigate the incident.
