LEWISTON — A 19-year-old Lewiston resident was critically injured Thursday night when his dirt bike collided with a car after running a red light, according to police.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:22 p.m. at the intersection of Sabattus Street and College Street.

Damonte Powell was transported to Central Maine Medical Center before being transferred by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center for advanced care, where he remains in critical condition.

According to the initial investigation, Powell was traveling inbound on Sabattus Street on a dirt bike that was not equipped for legal road use when he failed to stop for a red light at the intersection.

The driver of the sedan, who was traveling from Horton Street to College Street, was uninjured in the collision.

Preliminary findings suggest that speed, driver distraction, and failure to yield were contributing factors to the crash.

The Lewiston Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is actively investigating the incident.
