Driver dies after vehicle crashes into tree in Colonie

COLONIE — A 36-year-old male driver died Friday morning after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree under the Alternate State Route 7 overpass on Cohoes Road.

The Colonie Police Department received an emergency call about the single-vehicle crash at about 8 a.m., according to police officials.

Multiple fire departments, including Maplewood, Boght, Latham, and Schuyler Heights, responded to the scene alongside Colonie EMS.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was extricated by firefighters and transported to Albany Medical Center.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Authorities are withholding the driver’s name pending notification of next of kin.

Cohoes Road (State Route 32) was closed in both directions for several hours following the crash but has since reopened.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Colonie Police Department Traffic Safety Division.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident, particularly eyewitness accounts or video surveillance, to contact the Traffic Safety Division at 518-783-2754.
