OWEGO — Two Endicott men were arrested after deputies discovered them stealing copper wire from a vacant commercial building in the early morning hours of May 15.

Tioga County Sheriff’s Office deputies were performing a property check at the building on Taylor Rd. in the Town of Owego when they encountered the suspects unlawfully removing large amounts of copper wire.

When deputies attempted to detain the subjects, they refused verbal commands and fled further into the building.

A perimeter was established, and the subjects were eventually taken into custody with assistance from the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit.

Shane S. Kelly, 46, and Cameron R. Smith, 33, both of Endicott, were arrested and charged with burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the second degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, and possession of burglar’s tools.

Kelly was additionally charged with one count of resisting arrest.

Both subjects were arraigned in CAP Court on the evening of May 15.

Kelly was remanded to the Tioga County Jail with no bail, while Smith was released on his own recognizance.

In an unrelated incident on May 10, the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office arrested Roxonne Peabody, 60, of Newark Valley for criminal trespass in the second degree and criminal mischief in the fourth degree.

Investigators determined Peabody had unlawfully entered a residence and caused damage to someone else’s property.

Peabody was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Newark Valley Court at a later date.
