NEW HARTFORD — The New Hartford Police Department conducted a special operation targeting retail theft Wednesday, resulting in the arrest of a Utica man with outstanding warrants.
Daniel M. Smith, 52, was apprehended after attempting to steal a bicycle from the Target store at Sangertown Mall on May 14.
The operation involved undercover police officers and enhanced surveillance equipment deployed at multiple businesses throughout the area.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered Smith had an active warrant from the Town of New Hartford Criminal Court for petit larceny and criminal possession of a controlled substance, both misdemeanors.
Smith was charged with two counts of petit larceny and one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors.
Following processing, Smith was transported to the Oneida County Centralized Arraignment Part Court.
The operation was conducted in partnership with the local Loss Prevention Coalition Partners, with the goal of enhancing cooperation between businesses’ loss prevention staff and law enforcement.
Police officials stated the department will continue these planned operations periodically in addition to routine patrols to combat retail theft in the area.
