Suspicious device prompts evacuations in Owego

OWEGO — Village of Owego Police responded to a reported possible improvised explosive device at 77-79 Liberty St. on Wednesday, May 14, at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The area immediately surrounding the building was closed off for public safety and nearby residences were evacuated.

The Endicott Bomb Squad was requested and responded to the scene.

Bomb K-9 Units from Tompkins County and Cornell University determined that no other devices were present.

Owego Fire Department and Owego EMS were placed on standby for assistance.

The Endicott Bomb Squad successfully rendered the improvised explosive device safe.

The investigation is ongoing.
