Student reports gun at Connecticut high school, teen arrested

WATERBURY, CT — A 15-year-old male student was arrested Wednesday after allegedly bringing an unloaded handgun to Wilby High School, police said.

The incident began at approximately 7:38 a.m. when another student reported to school staff that a classmate had brandished a firearm on the school bus.

School staff immediately notified the Waterbury Police Department’s School Resource Officer assigned to the school, prompting officials to implement lockdown and shelter-in-place protocols.

Officers quickly identified the suspect and recovered an unloaded handgun from his possession.

The teen was taken into custody and charged with threatening in the first degree, possession of a weapon on school grounds, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal use of a firearm, breach of peace in the second degree and risk of injury to a minor.

The lockdown was lifted and normal school activities resumed after the situation was resolved.
