ELMIRA — An 18-year-old Elmira resident was arrested and charged with a felony weapons offense after police found a loaded handgun during a traffic stop Tuesday evening.
Amir Williams was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, according to the Elmira Police Department.
The arrest occurred around 7:30 p.m. on May 13 when an investigator with the department’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination Unit was conducting enforcement in an area identified as a crime “hot spot.”
Police said the investigator spotted a vehicle being operated by an individual classified as a “Chronic/Top Offender” near Broadway and Balsam streets.
During the traffic stop, officers discovered Williams, also identified as a “Chronic/Top Offender,” was a passenger in the vehicle.
A loaded handgun was found on Williams during the investigation, police said.
Williams was held in police custody pending arraignment in Elmira City Court.
