HUDSON — A Queens man has been arrested for allegedly scamming an elderly Chatham resident out of $62,000 in a fraudulent Publishers Clearing House scheme.
Lance Norman, 36, was charged with Grand Larceny in the Second Degree and Conspiracy in the Fourth Degree following an investigation by the New York State Police Livingston Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
The victim reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to represent Publishers Clearing House, informing him he had won $10 million and a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
The caller instructed the victim that he needed to pay taxes on the prize money upfront.
On two separate occasions, the victim met Norman in Hudson and turned over large sums of cash totaling approximately $62,000.
Following the report, Norman’s vehicle and description were shared with law enforcement agencies across the region.
He was subsequently stopped by New York State Troopers from SP Hawthorne in Westchester County, where a large amount of cash was discovered in his vehicle.
Norman was interviewed by BCI investigators and admitted to meeting with the victim on two occasions and receiving the money.
He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the City of Hudson Court on May 15 at 9 a.m.
