HAMBURG — One person died and three others were injured after a house explosion Monday night on West Lane, authorities said.
The Town of Hamburg Police responded to multiple reports of the explosion at 8:49 p.m., according to a statement from the department.
Officers found 78-year-old John Pease at the scene, who was transported to ECMC and remains in critical condition.
Firefighters later discovered 78-year-old Joene Pease deceased in the rubble.
The house was completely destroyed, and several nearby homes sustained damage from the blast.
A firefighter and a police officer were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the explosion is being investigated by the Town of Hamburg Fire Investigation Unit with assistance from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Erie County Fire, and NY State Fire.
West Lane remains closed as the investigation continues.
Seventeen fire companies responded to the scene, including Lake View, Evans Center, Hamburg, and Lake Shore.
Additional assistance was provided by AMR, Southtowns Hazmat, and New York State Police.
