Driver rescued after SUV plunges into Mohawk River

MOHAWK — State Police from Fonda responded to reports of a sport utility vehicle in the Mohawk River near Lock 12 at approximately 10:10 a.m. May 10.

The driver was located outside the vehicle by the Tri-County Swift Water Rescue Team and recovered from the water.

The individual was conscious when rescued and transported to Albany Medical Center by medical flight for treatment.

Evidence indicates the SUV was intentionally driven into the water, according to police.

The vehicle was carried by strong water currents before disappearing under the surface.

Search efforts for the submerged SUV are ongoing, and authorities have not determined a timeline for its removal.

The driver remains hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police are not releasing the driver’s name at this time.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Montgomery County Emergency Management Department, Lake Valley EMS, Tri-County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County EMS, Tribes Hill Fire Department, New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Cranesville Fire Department, Amsterdam Fire Department, and Fort Hunter Volunteer Fire Company.

The investigation continues.
