Inmate charged with assaulting 2 correctional officers in Rutland

RUTLAND — Vermont State Police have charged an inmate at Marble Valley Correctional Facility with assaulting two correctional officers using a makeshift weapon.

Lawrence Thompson, 21, of Bennington, allegedly struck the officers with a bar of soap concealed in a sock on March 3 at approximately 6:47 p.m.

Investigators said Thompson had made threats toward correctional officers prior to the attack.

The assault occurred while the officers were performing their regular duties at the State Street facility.

Thompson was issued a criminal citation on May 12 to appear in Vermont Superior Court – Rutland Criminal Division at 10 a.m. on June 16 to answer to two counts of aggravated assault on a correctional officer.

At the time of the incident, Thompson was already incarcerated at Marble Valley on charges of Aggravated Assault with a Weapon and Aggravated Disorderly Conduct, Threat of Bodily Injury or Violence.
