CORTLAND — A Cortland man was arrested for driving while intoxicated after a two-vehicle crash Friday night, and in an unusual twist, a friend who came to the scene was also arrested on DWI charges.
Wayne F. Schutt, 50, was charged after his 2019 Chevrolet Silverado struck the rear of a 2015 Audi that was slowing to turn onto Interstate 81 northbound, according to the Cortland Police Department.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:36 p.m. on Clinton Avenue Extension.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.
Schutt, a resident of Hamlin Street, was treated by TLC Ambulance for head pain before being arrested at about 10:20 p.m.
He faces charges of driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent, aggravated unlicensed operation, and following too closely.
While officers were investigating the crash, Jennifer L. McCracken, 52, also of Hamlin Street, drove to the scene and approached the investigating officers.
Police determined McCracken was also under the influence of alcohol and arrested her at approximately 10:41 p.m.
McCracken was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent.
Both Schutt and McCracken were processed at the Cortland Police Department and released.
They are scheduled to appear in Cortland City Court on June 9 at 9 a.m.
