UTICA — Police arrested a 37-year-old man Thursday after he allegedly fired a rifle at a group of juveniles in east Utica.

James Rydzeski was taken into custody after officers responded to reports of shots fired near Mathews Avenue and Caroline Street at approximately 4 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a male had fired a round from a long gun toward multiple juveniles before returning to a nearby residence.

Police established a perimeter around the home and convinced the suspect to exit without incident.

After obtaining a search waiver, officers located a .22 caliber long rifle inside the residence.

Rydzeski was transported to the Utica Police Department and charged with four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The department’s Crisis Intervention Unit also completed an Emergency Risk Protection Order against Rydzeski.
