WATERTOWN — A Canton man was arrested Thursday on two counts of kidnapping in the first degree stemming from allegations of sexual abuse dating back to the early 1980s.
John Church, 60, of 62 Bridge Street, Canton, was taken into custody by the Watertown Police Department following an investigation that began in January.
The investigation revealed alleged incidents of sexual abuse that occurred during the summers of 1982 and 1983 in Watertown.
Two victims were identified, both under 6 years of age at the time of the alleged abuse.
After consultation with the Waterbury States Attorney’s Office, authorities determined that the statute of limitations for sexual assault charges had expired.
An arrest warrant for two counts of kidnapping in the first degree was obtained through the Waterbury Superior Court.
Church was held on a $1.5 million bond and is expected to be arraigned at the Waterbury Superior Court on May 9.
