PLAINVILLE — A student at the Middle School of Plainville intentionally damaged a laptop with scissors, causing a fire that led to a school evacuation Tuesday morning, according to police.
Members of the Plainville Police Department and Plainville Fire Department responded to the school at 10:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a laptop computer fire in a classroom.
The incident triggered the fire alarm system, prompting a full evacuation of the building.
Investigators determined that a middle school student had deliberately inserted scissors into a laptop, which caused the device to emit smoke.
The student who caused the damage complained of smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
No other injuries were reported among students or staff.
School operations resumed in less than an hour after the incident.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and the student will be referred to juvenile court to face criminal charges.
