ELMIRA — A juvenile was arrested Wednesday after Elmira police found a loaded firearm on his person during a targeted patrol of high-crime areas.

The arrest occurred around 5:20 p.m. near W. 3rd St. and Elm St., when an investigator with the Elmira Gun Involved Violence Elimination (G.I.V.E.) Unit located a suspect connected to an April 5 incident.

According to police, the juvenile had previously brandished a firearm outside an establishment in the 200 block of W. Water St.

The juvenile, whose identity is being withheld due to age, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a class D felony.

Following arraignment in the Youth Part of Chemung County Court, the juvenile was released pending further court proceedings.

The operation was part of a G.I.V.E. detail focusing on areas with concentrated violent crime based on five-year data.

Multiple agencies participated in the detail, including the Elmira Police Department Drug Enforcement Unit, NYS DOCCS Elmira Parole Office, and the New York State Police Violent Gangs and Narcotics Enforcement Team.
