WEST BATH — A 47-year-old West Bath man was arrested Friday in connection with two burglaries at a local marine supply store after he allegedly cashed in stolen quarters at a credit union.
Shawn F. Toothaker was taken into custody after deputies executed a search warrant at his apartment in Green Acres Estates on New Meadows Road at approximately 2:45 p.m. on May 2.
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a commercial burglary at Brooks Marine Supply Company on State Road on April 22.
Stolen items included clothing, boots, sunglasses, and other assorted merchandise valued at over $1,000.
Three days later, the same location was burglarized again, with $1,000 in quarters reported stolen.
Deputies gathered evidence at the scene, including video surveillance recordings that helped identify suspects.
Detectives notified local supermarkets with Coinstar machines, as well as banks and credit unions, about the stolen coins.
Detective Sergeant Adam Temple received a call from the Five County Credit Union in Bath on May 2 reporting that a male subject had just cashed in a large quantity of quarters.
The suspect was identified through video recording evidence and was known to deputies from prior contacts.
The packaged quarters were positively identified by the owner of the burglarized business.
During the search of Toothaker’s apartment, deputies located numerous items stolen from the reported burglaries, including clothing, boots, and sunglasses.
Toothaker was booked at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on multiple counts of burglary and theft.
He is being held pending court appearances later this month.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
