Springfield police seize loaded firearm, arrest 21-year-old

SPRINGFIELD — Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit seized a loaded firearm and arrested 21-year-old Dequan Wood on Monday at approximately 12:45 p.m.

FIU Detectives received information around noon about a car crash on Allen Street and that one of the individuals involved was in possession of a firearm.

Detectives began surveilling the area to locate the subject’s vehicle.

At approximately 12:25 p.m., detectives observed a male matching the description of the subject with his hand holding an item inside his hooded sweatshirt.

As the subject drove away, detectives maintained mobile surveillance and members of the Springfield Police C3 Metro Unit arrived to assist.

The vehicle stopped in a parking lot on the 500 block of Belmont Avenue.

Detectives and C3 Officers detained the subject while he was outside the car.

Detectives recovered a loaded firearm inside his hooded sweatshirt and the suspect, later identified as Wood, did not have a license to carry nor a driver’s license.

Detectives also recovered an illegal amount of marijuana, more than 8 ounces, packaged to sell, inside a child’s backpack inside the car.

Wood, of Springfield, was placed under arrest and charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and possession with the intent to distribute a Class D drug.
