Man with 8 warrants charged with assault on Portland police officer

PORTLAND — Portland Police arrested a man with eight outstanding warrants after he allegedly assaulted an officer during an arrest attempt on Monday.

Officers were patrolling near Shaws on Washington Avenue at 12:18 p.m. when they recognized Nicholas Lavoie, 33, who was wanted on multiple warrants.

When police attempted to take Lavoie into custody, he began resisting and struck one of the officers in the head, causing a laceration, according to authorities.

Police said Lavoie continued to resist, causing significant scratches to the same officer’s neck.

The injured officer received medical treatment for his injuries.

Lavoie, who is unhoused, was charged with assault on a police officer and refusing to submit to detention or arrest, in addition to the eight outstanding warrants.

He was transported to the Cumberland County Jail following his arrest.
