ATHENS — A 31-year-old Albany man faces multiple felony charges after leading state police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds over 120 mph on Interstate 87 early Sunday morning.

Charles B. McCormick was arrested after troopers from State Police Coxsackie observed his 2016 Mercedes-Benz traveling northbound on the New York State Thruway in Athens at approximately 3:21 a.m., allegedly violating multiple traffic laws.

During the traffic stop, troopers determined McCormick was impaired and attempted to detain him, but he physically resisted arrest and fled in his vehicle.

The pursuit ended when police deployed a tire deflation device that disabled McCormick’s vehicle on the eastern shoulder of the highway.

A search of the vehicle and surrounding area yielded over one gram of crack cocaine, more than 140 grams of cocaine, and over 15 grams of fentanyl, according to police.

McCormick faces multiple charges including criminal possession of controlled substances, assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence, unlawful fleeing, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

He was arraigned in Athens Town Court and remanded to Greene County Jail pending a court appearance scheduled for May 8 at 3 p.m.
