MONTPELIER — A 28-year-old man was arrested Sunday after allegedly swinging an axe at another person during an argument over property, police said.

Randolph Tatro called 911 at approximately 3:46 p.m. on May 4, reporting that he had been assaulted when someone threw a rock at him.

Tatro told dispatchers he had to swing an axe at his alleged attackers to prevent them from following him, according to the Montpelier Police Department.

He refused to meet with officers and declined medical attention.

Police investigation revealed that Tatro had allegedly swung what they described as a “lethal cutting instrument” at a male who was in close proximity to him following a verbal argument over property.

Tatro was taken into custody and processed at the Montpelier Police Department before being transferred to the Department of Probation and Parole for violating his probation conditions.

He was transported to the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury where he will be held until arraignment.

Tatro is scheduled to be arraigned in Washington County Superior Court, Criminal Division at 12:30 p.m. on May 5, where he will face a charge of aggravated assault.
