Elderly bicyclist rescued from Wethersfield meadows after getting lost

WETHERSFIELD — A 72-year-old South Glastonbury man was rescued from the Meadows in Wethersfield after becoming lost while bicycling on Friday night.

Gregory Schmidt contacted the Wethersfield Police Department at 8:59 p.m. on May 2 after losing his way in the Meadows area.

Police were able to determine Schmidt’s location through his cell phone.

The Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department deployed a small boat to rescue Schmidt and bring him back to Great Meadow Road.

All emergency responders had cleared the scene by 12:09 a.m. on May 3.

Authorities determined that Schmidt had ridden his bicycle over the Arrigoni Bridge in Middletown and became lost while trying to find the Putnam Bridge to return to Glastonbury.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
