Malta residents alarmed by water gun game, sheriff warns of dangers

MALTA — The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a high school game called “Senior Assassin” after several incidents prompted emergency calls from concerned residents.

The game involves high school seniors “eliminating” opponents with water guns while following specific rules about timing and attire, including goggles and inflatable swim floaties.

Recently, the sheriff’s 911 center received multiple calls reporting a male with a firearm on U.S. Route 9 in Malta that turned out to be a water gun.

In a separate incident in the town of Halfmoon, deputies responding to a suspicious vehicle complaint witnessed a young female running toward the scene while screaming and holding an object in her hand.

Both incidents were determined to be connected to the “Senior Assassin” game.

“We understand that graduation time is a time for celebration,” said Undersheriff Jeffrey R. Brown.

“If you’re going to participate in this game, for everyone’s safety, please exercise good judgment.”

“Water guns may look realistic and running towards any active police investigation can have significant unintended consequences.”

The Sheriff’s Office stated it will continue working with schools and law enforcement partners to monitor the situation.
