BATH — A pedestrian was seriously injured Thursday morning when struck by a pickup truck at a crosswalk near Bath Iron Works, police said.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:40 a.m. at the crosswalk on Commercial Street near the intersection with King Street and the eastbound on-ramp to the Route 1 bridge.
According to Bath Police Chief Andrew Booth, a 27-year-old Bath man was walking south in the crosswalk on his way to work at BIW when he was struck by a 2018 GMC Sierra.
The truck was driven by a 23-year-old Wiscasset man who was heading east from the intersection at Washington and Commercial Streets after completing his night shift at BIW.
Initial investigation indicates that glare from the morning sun likely contributed to the crash, Booth said.
The pedestrian was transported to Maine Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver was not injured in the collision.
Officer Brett McIntire is conducting the investigation, which remains active.
Police reported no signs of impairment involving either the driver or pedestrian.
Booth noted this was the first serious vehicle-pedestrian crash in the area since 2016, which also involved BIW workers during morning commute hours and had similar visibility issues.
