Herkimer couple charged after dead dogs found in abandoned apartment

HERKIMER — Two Utica residents face multiple charges after New York State Police discovered two deceased dogs in an abandoned apartment in Herkimer.

On March 27, state police were called to assist a Herkimer County Humane Society investigator with an animal welfare complaint at an apartment on State Route 5.

Troopers found two deceased dogs confined in closed dog crates inside the abandoned apartment.

Following an investigation, police identified and arrested Joseph A. Warney, 30, and Emma E. Trask, 44, both of Utica, on April 29.

Each suspect faces two counts of failure to provide proper sustenance and two counts of neglect of an impounded animal under the Agriculture and Markets Law.

They were also each charged with two counts of improper disposal of dead animals, a violation under the Agriculture and Markets Law.

Warney and Trask are scheduled to appear in the Town of Herkimer Court on May 13 at 6 p.m.
