ATHENS — The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is investigating damage to the Hudson Athens Lighthouse after an apparent hit-and-run incident by an unknown vessel.
Deputies responded aboard Marine-1 at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of damage to the historic lighthouse.
Preliminary findings indicate the lighthouse was struck sometime between 3 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday, causing extensive damage to the dock and stairs.
The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office has responded with sonar equipment to determine if the vessel sustained damage that might have caused it to sink.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is also assisting with the investigation.
