Truck driver cited after Newfane covered bridge damaged in hit-and-run

NEWFANE — A Massachusetts truck driver faces charges after allegedly striking a historic covered bridge and fleeing the scene Wednesday morning.

Vermont State Police from the Westminster Barracks responded to the Williamsville Covered Bridge on Dover Road at approximately 8:14 a.m. after receiving reports that a large box truck had collided with the structure and left significant damage.

The vehicle was later located in Dover, where authorities identified the driver as Bay Van Nguyen, 49, of Lowell, Massachusetts.

Nguyen was cited for leaving the scene of an accident and providing false reports to law enforcement authorities.

The driver is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court’s Windham County Criminal Division on June 17 at 8:30 a.m. to answer to the charges.

Dover Police Department and the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles’ Enforcement and Safety Division assisted state police in the investigation.
