ARLINGTON — Vermont State Police have charged a local man with false pretenses after an investigation revealed he allegedly defrauded another resident in a snowmobile purchase scheme.

James D. Sears, 49, of Arlington, was issued a citation following an investigation that began on March 15.

Troopers from the Vermont State Police Shaftsbury Barracks discovered that Sears had allegedly failed to complete payments on a snowmobile over an 18-month period, with $1,800 still owed to the seller, Frederick W. Hoyt, 58, also of Arlington.

Investigators determined the snowmobile remained in Sears’ possession and was subsequently resold to another party using forged documents.

Sears is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Bennington Division, on June 9 at 8:30 a.m. to answer to the charge.
