Driver’s brake failure leads to crash at St. Johnsbury intersection

ST. JOHNSBURY — An 80-year-old Wheelock man suffered brake failure that led to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of US Route 2 and VT Route 18 on Monday, April 28, at approximately 4:41 p.m.

James Mitchell was traveling north on VT Route 18 when the brakes in his 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse failed, according to Vermont State Police.

Unable to stop at the intersection, Mitchell’s vehicle collided with a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan driven by Madeleine Balcom, 49, of Concord, who was traveling west on US Route 2.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Both vehicles were totaled in the collision.

Mitchell and Balcom both sustained suspected minor injuries and were transported to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital.

The Vermont State Police were assisted at the scene by the St. Johnsbury Fire Department and CALEX Rescue.

Mountain View Auto and Faufaw’s Towing removed the vehicles from the scene.
