Dorchester man arrested with loaded gun on Algonquin Street

BOSTON — A 37-year-old Dorchester man was arrested Monday after police responded to reports of a person with a gun near Algonquin Street and Bradlee Street.

Officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) responded to the scene at approximately 5:21 p.m. following a call about an armed individual.

Upon arrival, police located Calvin Godwin sitting on the front steps of 12 Algonquin Street next to a bicycle and drinking from an open container of alcohol.

During the investigation, officers recovered a black Helwan 9mm firearm with a wooden handle from Godwin’s backpack.

The weapon was loaded with a magazine containing eight live rounds of 9mm ammunition, though no round was chambered.

Police noted the firearm’s serial number appeared to be defaced.

Godwin was transported to District B-3 for booking and faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, drinking an alcoholic beverage in public, and trespassing.

He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on April 29.
