UTICA — A Utica man faces multiple weapons and assault charges after allegedly stabbing his ex-wife’s boyfriend and later firing shots at her residence during two separate incidents early Saturday.
Paris Smith, 31, was arrested following a standoff with police that lasted more than 90 minutes.
Police and fire units initially responded to a residence on the 1400 block of Sunset Avenue at approximately 12:30 a.m. regarding a stabbing.
Upon arrival, officers learned Smith had allegedly arrived at his ex-wife’s home and began arguing with her current boyfriend before brandishing a knife and causing a significant laceration to the boyfriend’s face.
Smith fled the scene after the stabbing, according to police.
At approximately 2 a.m., a ShotSpotter Alert notification indicated multiple gunshots were fired at the same residence.
Responding officers discovered several shots had been fired at the home and at a vehicle parked in the driveway.
Witnesses told police Smith had returned to the residence, engaged in another physical altercation, and fired multiple shots before fleeing again.
While officers were investigating, victims began receiving threatening text messages from Smith.
At approximately 4 a.m., police were dispatched to a residence on the 1500 block of Lincoln Avenue regarding a domestic incident where they found Smith inside.
After negotiations lasting over an hour and a half, a patrol sergeant convinced Smith to exit the residence, and he was taken into custody without incident.
A search of the Lincoln Avenue residence later that morning yielded a loaded .380 handgun, police said.
Smith was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree assault, second-degree aggravated harassment and second-degree harassment.
Additional charges may be filed after consultation with the District Attorney’s Office.
