CANTERBURY — A dump truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday after his vehicle crashed into trees in the median of Interstate 93.
The crash occurred at 5:20 p.m. near mile marker 47.4 on I-93 South in Canterbury.
State Troopers from the Troop D barracks arrived to find good Samaritans attempting to help the driver, who was trapped inside the severely damaged truck.
Firefighters eventually freed the driver, who was transported by ambulance to Concord Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, is currently listed in critical condition.
Authorities are withholding the driver’s name pending the ongoing investigation and notification of family members.
Preliminary investigation revealed the white 1996 International 4700 dump truck, which was towing an industrial woodchipper, was traveling southbound in the travel lane when it crossed into the high-speed lane before leaving the roadway and striking multiple trees in the median.
As of 10 p.m., the passing lane remained closed while crews worked to clear debris and remove the dump truck from the median.
Canterbury Fire & Rescue, Tilton-Northfield Fire Department, and Penacook Rescue Squad assisted troopers at the scene.
