MERRIMACK — The Merrimack Police Department has issued a scam alert following numerous reports of fraudulent phone and email activities.
Victims reported receiving calls from individuals impersonating members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department, including an alleged “Sgt. Whitlock,” claiming a civil warrant for their arrest.
The scammers have been asking for cryptocurrency payments to resolve the warrant and instructing victims not to discuss the matter with anyone else.
Authorities confirmed that the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department has been notified of the scam.
They emphasized that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never request payments in the form of cryptocurrency, wire transfers, gift cards, or any means other than cash paid directly to a Bail Commissioner at a police department or jail.
Residents are urged to contact the Merrimack Police Department if they encounter any suspicious activity.
