Elmira police arrest man on weapons charges after traffic stop

ELMIRA — Elmira police arrested a Lindley man on weapons charges early Monday morning following a traffic stop in the area of Fulton Street and Partridge Street.

The arrest occurred at approximately 4:36 a.m. when officers stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a sign, in violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.

The driver, identified as Timothy Westervelt, 30, was found to have an active warrant.

Upon investigation, officers discovered methamphetamine and a loaded 9mm handgun in Westervelt’s possession.

Westervelt has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, with further charges pending.

He is currently awaiting arraignment in Elmira City Court.
