DAVENPORT — A Maryland man has been indicted on multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter following a fatal crash where his vehicle struck a house, Delaware County Sheriff Craig S. DuMond announced Tuesday.
Jayden E. Aviles, 18, was arrested April 1 after a Delaware County Grand Jury handed down an indictment related to the September 29, 2024, crash on State Highway 23 in Davenport.
Deputies responded to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle that had crashed into a residence with the driver walking around inside the home.
Upon arrival, emergency medical technicians informed deputies that two occupants of the house had sustained major injuries, including one victim with a fractured femur and head trauma, while another was in critical condition with severe head trauma.
Deputies interviewed Aviles at the scene, where he allegedly exhibited signs of impairment and failed standardized field sobriety tests, leading to his arrest.
Following a Drug Influence Evaluation at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, investigators determined Aviles was impaired by cannabis at the time of the crash.
Later that evening, deputies were informed that one of the victims had died from injuries sustained in the collision.
The grand jury indicted Aviles on March 20 on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, first-degree vehicular assault, second-degree vehicular assault, and moving from a lane unsafely.
Following his arraignment before Judge Hubbard in Delaware County Court, Aviles was released on pre-trial conditions requiring him to surrender his passport and driver’s license, remain within Delaware, Otsego, and Chenango counties, and maintain contact with the Delaware County Probation Department.
Aviles is scheduled to appear in Delaware County Court at a later date for further proceedings.
