MONTPELIER — Officers from the Montpelier Police Department arrested a 35-year-old transient man after he allegedly broke into a residence and assaulted the occupant on April 3.

James Doyle was taken into custody after police responded to a reported assault at 8 School Ave. at approximately 8:57 p.m.

The victim told police that Doyle forcibly entered her residence, physically assaulted her, and threatened her life if she contacted authorities.

Officers observed injuries consistent with an assault on the victim and signs of forced entry on her door.

Witness testimony corroborated the victim’s account, and further investigation linked Doyle to the crime scene.

Doyle was uncooperative during his arrest and denied involvement in the incident.

A Vermont Superior Court Judge imposed a $5,000 cash bail following the arrest.

Doyle was transported to the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility and lodged due to lack of bail.

He was arraigned in Washington County Superior Court, Criminal Division on March 5 at 12:30 p.m. on charges of Burglary into an Occupied Dwelling, Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Mischief, and Violation of Conditions of Release.
