Bedford police warn of caller ID spoofing scam

1 min read

BEDFORD — The Bedford Police Department issued an alert Tuesday after a scammer “spoofed” the department’s phone number to trick a resident into paying money to avoid criminal charges.

Officials said the scammer made the call appear to come from the “Bedford Police Department” on caller ID.

The department emphasized that neither Bedford police nor other law enforcement agencies will call residents demanding payment over the phone.

According to police, scammers typically request payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency or other difficult-to-track methods.

Authorities warned that these scammers often try to keep potential victims on the phone for extended periods to prevent them from contacting police.

Residents who receive suspicious calls are encouraged to contact the Bedford Police Department’s business line at 781-275-1212 or visit the police station to report the incident.
