Pedestrian struck by train in Pittsfield dies from injuries

PITTSFIELD — A pedestrian died after being struck by a westbound freight train near the Big Y Supermarket in Pittsfield on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:22 p.m. on March 12 when two males were observed walking westbound on the railroad tracks.

According to Pittsfield Police, the train operator spotted the individuals on the tracks and attempted to warn them by activating the train’s horn.

One individual managed to avoid the collision, but the second person was struck by the train.

The injured pedestrian was transported to Berkshire Medical Center with life-threatening injuries by Action Ambulance, where they later died.

The second individual fled the scene before emergency responders arrived and has not been identified.

Pittsfield Police Department, Pittsfield Fire Department, and Action Ambulance personnel responded to the scene.

Authorities are withholding the name of the deceased until family members have been notified.
