LEWISTON — Lewiston police are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday night at the Masjidu Salaam Mosque during a Ramadan service.
Police were dispatched to the mosque at 243 Bartlett St. at approximately 9:45 p.m. on March 7 following numerous reports of gunfire in the area.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with an individual who confirmed a shooting had taken place in the mosque’s parking lot.
The mosque was holding a Ramadan celebration service at the time of the incident, though police reported limited cooperation from the numerous attendees.
At 10 p.m., officers were called to St. Mary’s Hospital where a male with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound had been dropped off.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old Liban Hassan of Lewiston, was not cooperative with investigators, but evidence suggests he was shot during the mosque incident.
Police returned to the scene early Saturday morning and recovered over a dozen shell casings of assorted calibers, indicating multiple shooters were involved.
Hassan’s vehicle was found abandoned with extensive damage from bullet holes, police said.
The vehicle was impounded and searched after authorities obtained a search warrant.
Hassan has since been released from the hospital but continues to be uncooperative with the investigation.
