CONCORD — A 65-year-old convicted sex offender who had been living in the woods was captured Tuesday afternoon in Essex County after several years on the run.
Elwin Moses was arrested yesterday at around 2:40 p.m. on Long Hill Road in Concord by Vermont State Police troopers and Essex County Sheriff’s Department deputies.
Authorities said Moses had been living in a wooded area to avoid capture.
He attempted to provide a false name to officers during the arrest, police said.
Moses has a criminal record dating back to 1979 and was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison for aggravated felonious sexual assault committed in the late 1990s. He was granted parole earlier in 2022 but failed to maintain contact with authorities, leading to a New Hampshire warrant.
He was also wanted for failing to register as a sex offender in Derry, New Hampshire, his last known residence before disappearing.
Moses was processed at the St. Johnsbury barracks and ordered held without bail by Judge Michael R. Kainen.
He was scheduled to be arraigned today in Essex County Criminal Court on charges of being a fugitive from justice and providing false information to law enforcement.
