Man dies in motorcycle crash in Irasburg

IRASBURG — A 24-year-old Alabama man died Saturday after his motorcycle left the road and struck a tree on Route 58 in Irasburg, Vermont State Police said.

Korban Rutherford, 24, of Hanceville, Alabama, was traveling westbound on Route 58 near the intersection of Houston Heights at about 11:31 a.m. when he swerved to the right and left the roadway, according to police. He struck a tree and sustained serious injuries.

Rutherford was transported to North Country Hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts.

Witnesses told police Rutherford appeared to swerve after perceiving a second vehicle entering Route 58 from Houston Heights.

The driver of that vehicle was attempting a left turn onto the westbound lane of Route 58 but came to a complete stop before entering Rutherford’s lane of travel, according to interviews with witnesses.

Police said the vehicle did not cross into the westbound lane.
