MIDDLESEX — A Burlington woman was cited for negligent operation after allegedly tailgating a Vermont State Police cruiser and then speeding in excess of 100 mph on Interstate 89.

Kaitlyn Trottier, 22, was traveling south on Interstate 89 near mile marker 55 in Middlesex at approximately 9:06 a.m. on March 12 when she began tailgating a state police cruiser in her 2017 Subaru Impreza, according to authorities.

Troopers said Trottier then straddled the dashed dividing line between the passing lane and travel lane for a short period.

When there was a break in traffic, Trottier moved into the travel lane, passed the state police officer, and accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph, police reported.

Trottier was subsequently stopped and issued a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint for following too closely, a violation of Title 23 VSA 1039, which carries a penalty of 3 points and a $220 fine.

She was also issued a citation to appear in Washington County Superior Court, Criminal Division, for negligent operation, a violation of Title 23 VSA 1091.
