EAST BRIDGEWATER — An 83-year-old Bridgewater woman was rescued by good Samaritans after her car crashed into a tree and caught fire Saturday morning.
East Bridgewater Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of 260 West St. (Route 106) at approximately 11:48 a.m. following reports of a crash.
Upon arrival, first responders found a vehicle on fire after it had struck a tree.
Bystanders had already pulled the elderly driver from the burning vehicle before emergency personnel arrived.
One of the good Samaritans, a nurse, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the unconscious driver until paramedics arrived.
East Bridgewater Fire Department paramedics took over advanced care at the scene.
The driver, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was transported by ambulance to Boston Medical Center.
According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was traveling eastbound on West Street when it crossed the center line and left the roadway.
The car struck and snapped a utility pole before crashing into a tree, which caused the vehicle to catch fire.
Police Chief Michael Jenkins praised the actions of the bystanders who intervened during the dangerous situation.
